I'll define realistic as something you can actually afford to pull off within three years. Yes, you can imaginary-sell your current car(s) to raise funds. You've gotta pay for everything though.

1. My '93 Miata, with all the mods I imagine having done in three years. In addition to my bucket seat, I want upgraded brakes (these are right around the corner IRL), lightweight 15" wheels, stickier tires, a roll bar, and maybe a little suspension work. Nothing that kills the original car's character.

2. A Volvo 740 Turbo with the four speed. Must be a beater. I'd do all the cheap eurotrash aesthetic mods, such as rectangular French-yellow foglamps, any sort of black wheel (like black steel is seriously fine), tinted windows, smoked taillights, clear indicator lights all around, loud & ugly exhaust, and lots of eurotrash stickers. Perhaps reupholster the seats with Mexican blankets.

Well mine is easy because I already own one of my dream cars,

I would keep my GTI but add some sweet upgrades, it would be my DD grocery getter that can kick ass on the highway.

I would buy a used Cayman S in a few years when the prices drop.

I would also keep my Crown Victoria and maybe do a Diesel V10 swap?

Dream and Realistic?! If I try really hard, I might be able to pull off a new S4 for my daily driver. For a toy, I'd have to keep it basic and go with a AW11 Toyota MR2. I think this would be my ideal, best possible combo that's marginally realistic and dream like.

My 99 Miata on some nice suspension and some light 15's with the flyin miata chassis kit thrown at it.

And for my second it would be a bug eye wrx wagon. I'd just be happy to find a relatively clean one at this point, but I would be willing to take a later wrx and facedown it to a bug eye. either way I will have a bug eye wagon. Maybe a beat to hell bug eye 2.5 RS and do a STi swap. . . Meh, I'd just be happy with a wagon.

Secondly, I dunno - I suppose I gotta be somewhat reasonable, right?

I could easily say NA/NB Miata, but hopefully I'll have a family to drive around too. In that case, E36 coupe. M3 very possible in the farther future, but a 328is or 323is with some tasteful mods even would be good.

In fact, I'm actually considering an E36 coupe as my next car if I do go ahead and get a motorcycle as I hope to.

1. AW11 MR2, I'd rock it completely stock (okay okay, maybe I'd upgrade the suspension and add nice wheels), like this:

Kinja'd!!!

2. A GC Impreza with a STi drivetrain and an EJ22T swap from a 93-96 Legacy Turbo. I'd rock it on steelies, like such:

Hmmm, well since we're being realistic I'll include the car I already own.

1.) Ford Mustang GT, perhaps with an addition of some light modification; Struts/Shocks, a Big Brake Kit so that I don't have to worry about overheating brakes at the track, and a set of wheels that would fit some Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Kinja'd!!!

2.) Another 2000-something Porsche Boxster S like the one that caught fire, preferably one that's had the IMS bearing replaced with something sturdier or one of the after-'05 models with the different engine and also running Michelin Pilot Super Sports because they're fantastic.

Realistically...

Kinja'd!!!

Porsche 996TT with X50 package. All wheel drive, ~450 horsepower, and "functional as long as you only carry skinny girls or little kids" back seats. Surprisingly practical, so long as there isn't a ton of snow accumulating.

Kinja'd!!!

Nissan Frontier S/C Extended Cab with a tow package
So why this particular model? Reasonably sized back seats, a truck bed, four-wheel drive, the ability to tow toys, and a supercharged V6 means you could probably get away with anything for your first car so long as you pick something like this as your second car. And as much as I would love to put a X3/Cayenne Turbo here, the reliability and cheap maintenance is a factor.

So how close am I?

Naturally aspirated 996 C2 - I could have saved for a twin turbo, but then in my price range I would be looking at likely abused/undocumented versions.

Naturally aspirated Nissan Xterra with a tow package. Girl wasn't having a pickup, but the Xterra has made owning a Boxster and now a 911 perfectly reasonable as any dog hauling, Home Depot trips, motorcycle/quad hauling, etc. is handled by the Xterra.

Only 2? I'd have to downsize the flett, but it'd probably be these two:

Alfetta saloon with a 3.0l V6 from a 75, in this gorgeous yellow:

Kinja'd!!!

The second one would be tricky. Probably a Triumph Stag running either ITBs (easier and sound fantastic) or modified 16v Dolly Sprint heads (exceedingly difficult but theoretically possible).

Kinja'd!!!

Either that or a Rover P6 V8 and a supercharged Alfetta GTV, or Triumph Dolomite Sprint and an XJS V12, or a 3.0l Alfa 156 and a Triumph Spitfire I6 (close to what I have now), or a Jaguar XJ40 estate and a Lancia Fulvia, or a 3.5l Alfa 6 and a Chevrolet Corvair, or a Maserati BiTurbo and a Matra Murena (if I hate parts availability), or an Alfa 159 Sportwagon and a Jaguar XJC, or a Peugeot 404 and a Triumph GT6, or a Reliant Scimitar and a Mazda RX-4, or a Lada Niva and a Jensen Interceptor, or a Volvo 142 and a Hillman Imp.

I've not driven an Abarth because the impracticality of 2 doors and no storage was too much for the fun factor to overcome. But the Fiesta—even though it does have 4 doors and what some call 'space' in the hatch—for all its practicality, DOES have a huge fun factor.
